A humorous folktale set in a Romanian countryside town.

“Pacala Returns Home”

Pacala, the mischievous trickster, tells one lie too many—
causing a great commotion that engulfs the entire village!

Pacala in His Villageby Ion Slavici

Păcală was a fellow who wandered about without care, never taking to work, but always finding his amusement in meddling with people’s lives and laughing at their foolishness. For a long time this was his way. Yet, at last, he grew weary of it.

One day, Păcală thought to himself:
“Why not settle down? I’ll build me a home and live in peace.”

For it is said among Romanians: there’s no place in the world better than your own village.

And so, back Păcală went. He had saved a bit of money, just enough to buy a heifer calf, and he left it to graze on the village pasture.

The calf ate well and grew quickly. Soon it was larger than any cow in the whole village.

“Saints preserve us!” cried the villagers.
“This calf is bigger than all our cows! What on earth does Păcală feed it? What kind of breed is this beast?”

But truth be told, the calf was no special breed, nor did it eat any fine feed. No, indeed—it had been sneaking into the neighbors’ wheat fields, stuffing itself full!

Day by day it grew fatter, and soon it strutted about as if the fields belonged to it. Wheat, corn, it made no difference—it trampled and ate wherever it pleased.

The villagers began to fret.
“What will become of us?” they asked one another.
“Today it is one calf. Tomorrow it will be a milk cow. Păcală will sell it, buy more calves from the town, and bring them here. They too will grow and give milk. And then? We shall all be ruined!”

So the villagers cried out:
“Good people! If we do nothing, this calf of Păcală’s will eat us out of house and home!”

They thought long and hard until their heads ached. At last they came to a decision:
“The fat of this calf comes from our fields. Therefore, the meat belongs to us. But the hide—that is Păcală’s, for when the calf came to the village, it already wore its hide.”

And so it was done. They killed the calf, shared the meat among themselves, and flung the hide into Păcală’s yard.

Păcală could not say a word. He might have taught them a lesson, had he wished.
But he would not harm his own folk, for he loved them dearly. So he hung the hide upon a tree branch to dry. Then he wrapped it round a staff, and set off to town to sell it...
